School 'furlough day' not likely
The Wake school board probably won't be able to cut a day off the school year so employees can take their furloughs. The Wake school board and the leader of the Wake educators association decided Tuesday to ask the state board to allow the district to hold 179 days of school rather than 180. The state board did not address Wake's request specifically. When asked whether the board would allow a district to close school for a day to handle furloughs, William Harrison, the board chairman and state public schools CEO, said, "I don't think so."
As expected, the furlough policy says teachers, media specialists, bus drivers and teacher assistants who require substitutes cannot take school days off. Really??? We are teachers...what would make you think we WOULDN'T need a sub?????
And here is his solution for the furlough...are you ready???
But Harrison said he is telling local districts that employees can take furlough time here and there during the school day if they're not teaching or supervising students. For example, a teacher who has a planning period in his schedule that she doesn't need can count that time toward the 10 hours.
( WHAT??? Name ONE TEACHER who has a planning period that she/he doesn't need...are you KIDDING ME???)
So now I can just sit in my classroom during planning period and not get paid...YAY! I get to work for FREE!

And don't even get me started about the poor bus drivers...read on:

Unlike teachers, bus drivers who are paid by the hour don't have days they can use for furloughs. It is still unclear how bus drivers will be able to take a 10-hour leave.
I am flabbergasted at the lack of intelligent thinking here. CLEARLY these people have no idea what goes on in the education field...
Ok OK done with my soap box...someone help me down..I am old and may fall....and Heaven knows the State Health plan won't be able to help me if I get hurt...

You know they are doing so much to try and help the economy but I think they don't think about the things they are really effecting in the long fun. Education is so important, and every aspect that goes into it. I think poor teachers have one of the hardest lowest paid jobs.
